About Us

Dunbar School of Dance was founded in 1998 by Julie Friar, and since then has become one of the leading schools in East Lothian. Today we offer classes focusing on a huge variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary and Scottish and Over 200 children are now enrolled in the school from ages 3 to 18. New for 2019, we are also now offering Acrobatic Arts, and Stretch, Strength, Technique, as well as Competition Teams, hand-picked by Miss Stewart. We strongly believe that dance benefits everyone, and our classes not only improve fitness, flexibility and strength, but also confidence, discipline, teamwork and self esteem. More information about the classes we offer can be found here. Our classes are led by highly experienced and qualified teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic and more information about them can be found here

In recent years the school has had a huge amount of success. In December of 2015 one of our pupils Euan Garrett debuted as the starring role in “Billy Elliot The Musical” in the Victoria Palace Theatre London, a massive achievement and one that all of his friends, classmates and teachers are extremely proud of. In February 2016, 43 pupils and parents travelled to London to watch Euan perform and to take class at Pineapple Dance Studios. The trip was a huge success, as everyone had a fantastic time and many new friendships were formed. We were also invited to support Pasha Kovalev (Strictly Come Dancing Professional) on his UK tour where we performed two dances, in one of which Pasha danced with us. We were so proud of all of our dancers that night as we are always.

Euan is not the only pupil to achieve great things at Dunbar School of Dancing however, as our pupils have won awards at RAD Junior

Awards Days, and in Summer 2016 our RAD exam results were the

best they have ever been.  That year, our exam results were also some of the highest marks in Scotland, with several of our dancers achieving marks well into the 90s. We continue to achieve extremely high exam results every year, with several pupils taking Intermediate and Advanced exams last year and this year.

The highlight of the school year for everyone is the Christmas Show, at which we raise money for the Sick Kids Hospital In Edinburgh. Last year, £3343.20 was raised for the Hospital, and over the years, we have raised well over £30,000. The Show is a great weekend and is one that could not go ahead without the colossal amount of work put in by the teachers, pupils and their parents. Everyone has a great time, and every child makes their families, friends and teachers extremely proud. More information about the Show can be found on the Christmas Show page.

We are always trying to be the best we can for our pupils and this means our teachers regularly attend courses, and we try to offer our pupils as many great opportunities as possible. For example we have hosted workshops with Sarah Medley and Jerome Marchand (Principal Dancers of the Royal Swedish Ballet), Kate McWilliam (professional acrobat) and also classes with Kenn Burke, Head of the Dance School of Scotland.

We are also happy to report that several of our pupils have secured places at Royal Ballet Associates and Scottish Ballet Associates, we're sure they will do well in these classes too. We hope for another very successful exam season and Show this year, well done to all our dancers for always being amazing.
