Our Teachers

Our three teachers are very experienced and highly qualified both in working with children and in the world of dance, choreography and performance. Read more about them below.

Julie Friar

I began my dance teaching career  in 1990 at a school in Greece where I taught Ballet Modern and Tap. I then relocated to Norway to teach dance within a specialist music school.  After a 3 year training course with the Royal Academy of Dance I gained  my accreditation from the Academy as a registered teacher.  During the 3 years of training, I studied history of dance, anatomy, child psychology, teaching methodologies and dance training to advanced level in ballet, modern and tap.  In addition to this, I also hold the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance Associate Teaching Certificate and am a certified progressing Ballet Technique teacher. I am constantly attending courses and workshops with the likes of Royal Ballet and the Royal Academy of Dance, to ensure my pupils are given the best learning experience possible.

I established the Dunbar School of Dancing in January 1998 and always look forward to welcoming new pupils.  Children are welcome to try the class before enrolment, after which they may leave without further obligation.  In my experience children enjoy and reap wide benefit from dance classes and it gives me enormous pleasure to play my part.

Meryl Stewart

I studied at The Julie Mitchell Edinburgh Dance Academy as a child. During my time at EDA I performed professionally in the Edinburgh pantomime productions of Jack and the Beanstalk and Mother Goose. I have also performed in many theatres across the UK; including The Usher Hall, The Kings Theatre Edinburgh, The Playhouse and The Royal Albert Hall in London at the first ever dance proms . At 16 years old I successfully auditioned for Bird College of Professional Dance and Musical Theatre in London.

Since returning to Edinburgh, I have been sharing my love of dance and performing for the past five years by teaching at various schools and studios across the city. I teach classes in many different styles, including Ballet, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Commercial, Progressing Ballet Technique and Acro. I am a certified Acrobatic Arts teacher and a certified Progressing Ballet Technique teacher. I am a certified Level 2 fitness instructor and teach corporate barre classes and classes at Tribe Yoga who have studios across Edinburgh. I am always keen to further my career in dance teaching and am coming to the end of my second year of the Royal Academy of Dance Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies. I am very excited about starting the first ever competition team at Dunbar School of Dance!
